Local Vendor Love: Blush & Whim

One of the perks of being in Minneapolis is that there are SO many amazingly talented vendors we are lucky enough to get to know. One of them even happens to be our very own neighbor (Quincy Street represent), Jennae Saltzman. As the owner and lead planner at Blush and Whim, a wedding planning and event design company here in Minneapolis, she shared a little bit about her process and style.

On the first event she ever planned:

I was 8 years old and I planned an elaborate wedding from my dog, Dusty. He married a lovely black lab who lived down the street. There was a lot of glitter glue, a wedding party made up of guinea pigs, and a milk bone cake to top it all off. It was fabulous.

On her (awesome) design style:

I feel like my design style fluctuates and evolves based on how I am feeling at a certain point in my life or what is inspiring me. In a design, I definitely love a mix of feminine and masculine elements. I also love simple elements surrounded by intricate details and more elaborate design. It’s all about that balance!

On inspiration:

I am inspired by so many things; art, music, fashion, my dogs cute paws prints, the list goes on! I get a lot of inspiration from elements in nature- If I’m on a walk or exploring a new area, I’m constantly thinking “wow, that tree formation would be an amazing spot for a ceremony set-up" or “these wild looking flower bushes would make a stunning centerpiece.” I also love checking out boutiques and unique spaces in Minneapolis to see how people style a display window or set-up a room. It’s really all about pulling ideas from every aspect of your life to give any event true beauty and balance.

On her favorite aspect of designing events:

Meeting with my clients for the very first time and seeing the light in their eyes when they talk about what they envision for their wedding day! There are so many wonderful ideas and inspiration out there and I never get tired of hearing about what people want. Even if I’ve seen or done something before, it’s different every time because each client brings a breath of fresh air and new life to it. I’m always excited to create and present my clients with their design boards to show them that what they want, can be done!

On the best part of her job:

Working with the fantastic vendors in the Minneapolis industry! I am in awe of the talent that surrounds me and feel so fortunate to be able to work with so many fabulous people on a day to day basis. I have learned so much from vendors I admire and love being able to collaborate with them to make the visions of my clients come to life.

Vintage Florals

In honor of this couple's one year anniversary, we wanted to share the custom invitation suite we designed for them. The suite exudes subtle vintage elegance with beautiful, hand drawn florals paired with a soft color palette of our blush and nude inks on soft white cotton paper.  With quirky additions to the suite, such as a sketch of the couple with their dog on the save the date and the reply card, this couple was sure to have a fabulously fun, and memorable affair. Congratulations on one year Cassie & Mike!

Hawaiian Elegance

We had the pleasure of designing the wedding stationery for this beyond gorgeous wedding held at Haiku Mill in Maui. The invitation is a custom design derived from our Lily passport design. The suite features a custom pocket fold in our chocolate paper printed in our metallic copper ink. The rest of the suite was printed in our melon and chocolate inks on soft white paper.

New place, New faces...

Introducing the fabulous employees of Spark Letterpress.

Alana Amdahl came to Spark in 2012 because of her love for all things crafty and beautiful. Graduating from SDSU with a degree in consumer affairs and a minor in business, Alana is your go-to sales and consumer relations gal. She’s chipper and always happy to dream up big letterpress ideas! Growing up in a building family she loves all things pertaining to home DIY and decor. She bought her first house this year and has been very busy making it a home.  In her free time she sells real estate, crafts like a mad woman, and throws elaborate dinner parties!

Chelsea Marsh graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Design and Advertising. After designing her wedding invitations in 2010, she fell in love with all things stationery and printing. She joined the Spark team in 2012 and still can’t believe how lucky she is to be doing exactly what she’s dreamed of doing everyday. Thanks to the wonders of technology, Chelsea happily designs for our clients from her home with her new daughter, Charlie, the littlest member of the Spark family, right by her side.

Originally from Wooster, Ohio, Jason Yoh has a BFA in printmaking from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has been a full-time letterpress printer since 2005, having worked at shops in Syracuse, Brooklyn and Minneapolis. Jason likes to think something is carried over when paper goods are handcrafted on generations-old machines and has a related fondness for old tractors. Favorite shop smell: Gojo soap. Favorite Pantone color: 185. Favorite font: Caslon. Lastly, he doesn't believe in naming printing presses but won't judge those who do.

Megan Burke hails originally from Wisconsin and graduated from Kansas State University. She has worked in operations with numerous arts organizations around the country while moonlighting as a bright-eyed bar maiden and introverted artist. At Spark Letterpress she serves as your friendly stationery sales associate, working hard to translate your amazing ideas so our amazing printers can make your dreams come true. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking and ten years of customer service experience, Megan boasts a plethora of creativity, professionalism and niceness to boot.

Annie Walsh is a born and bred Midwest girl. She graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. Annie has a passion for and background in design but stumbled upon letterpress printing and hasn’t looked back. Having had experience printing and learning at various shops and book arts institutions, she is very excited to be a part of the team at Spark. Annie will be learning all aspects of production and finishing in her junior press operator role.
