Fonts have personalities. Although there are thousands out there to choose from they all have something to portray and a certain "feeling" they give off. For example: our most popular font is "Bickham" - this says classic and elegant. The style of font used in your invitation suite can drastically change your stationery's personality.

Here is a sample of Ava from Spark's Wedding Love Album. It is the exact same artwork just with very different font choices and colors. (Click on the image to view larger.)
Rules to remember:

• Avoid combining fonts that are too similar in appearance. Choose one that is really bold and one that is really light. Or one that is really clean and simple with a fancy script.

• Don't get too crazy with the number of fonts you choose to use. Try to keep it down to a maximum of 3 - using 2 is very common and works well.

• Make sure the font you choose for your body text is legible. If you choose something that is too fancy no one will be able to read it. From the font selections in our design book some good choices are: Bodoni, Gotham, Futura, Mrs. Eaves, Neue, Neutra and Roman Classic to name a few.

• Avoid orphans! Orphans are when you have a paragraph of text and one of the lines just
has
1-3 words on it following a long line of text. It becomes very distracting and throws off alignment.

• Avoid text over loads! Yes, we know you have lots of information you want to put on the small card - but just know that if you do have lots of text that we are either going to have to compromise on the text or the design. Make sure you compare your invite wording to the example in the book you have chosen - is there 2 times as much information?

• Don't be afraid of white space! Type and design don't like being too close to each other or the edges. Give them room to breathe!

• If you are not sure about fonts have a look at the design book. There are tons of different ones to choose from. After that, if you are still unsure feel free to ask for our assistance!

• Type up your wording. This is always helpful to our designers and eliminates spelling errors right off the bat. Since Andrea and I are setting your type and are mainly concerned with the design itself, sometimes those small errors can get overlooked after we've been staring at the same piece for hours. We try to catch as many things as we can but you will most likely get your proof sooner if your information is provided right when your order is placed with us.

Rustic Leaves

We are now printing Fall weddings, so it felt appropriate to showcase this invitation as an option for our Fall and Winter invitation ideas. Our Natalya design featured in our wedding love album has been a popular choice by couples all over the country. Most of the rustic leaf artwork (some samples shown above) has been printed in darker tones such as navy, royal, purple, eggplant, gold and teal. The original Natalya rustic leaf design is a dramatic black on black and white look.

Take note of the pocket folds! Artwork printed on our colored paper pocket folds take on a subtle beauty when printed with transparent inks. So if you are looking for that tone on tone effect, just request the transparent ink for your printed piece.

National Stationery Show Wrap-up

It was so exciting to complete another National Stationery Show. Connecting with our retailers, potential and existing, was one of our favorite parts. We currently have retailers in 45 locations, and are working on the second wave of releasing our new custom albums. It was a very good feeling to leave the Show with many, many cards in hand of people interested in carrying Spark. Now that we are back home, we are seeing the applications come in from all over and will be speaking with all of you soon.

If you are a retailer considering the Spark custom albums, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions. We were so thrilled to meet all of you and want to have you feel good about choosing Spark.

Wedding & Stationery Love Albums have arrived!

I think we were all a bit teary-eyed yesterday here at Spark. Yeah, we're an emotional bunch, and I don't mind admitting it! We all took a moment yesterday to watch them unload the 90 boxes of albums. The second the receipts were all signed we tore into the boxes to find one of each of the four albums we ordered. I think half the excited was just in knowing that they turned out how I had hoped.

It was such a fun process to design something we actually didn't have to make for once. The albums are made out of recycled chipboard and have colorful spines. I like to keep certain things simple, so you'll see our Spark squiggles in the background and then just our logo on the front cover. I wanted the eco-friendly materials we chose to stand out a bit. Even the interior pages are made out of chipboard.

Sure, the albums are huge and they always seem bigger in person than when you are planning them out in Illustrator. BUT we know our current and new retailers will just love them when they see how expanded our new sets are because we certainly didn't hold anything back when dreaming about these albums. Each of the 20 wedding and event suites features 20 pieces (oddly enough). We wanted each and every customer that is shown the album to see a lot of the additional pieces that we feel would make your wedding/event stationery feel more complete – beyond the traditional 4-piece set. Each suite features everything from save-the-dates and pocketfolds to day-of items like programs, menus and coasters. Check out the wedding section of our web site to see how each design suite comes together. (I promise to tell you more about the Stationery Love Albums in a future post.)

I have to say there's something to be said about seeing all of your hard work really start to come together. It has been weeks now that we have been watching the new designs come off press and there were days where I'd wonder if we would ever be able to see the finish line. When the albums arrived - without incident - I could definitely see that finish line.

All of us at Spark can't wait for you to see the photos we are working on of all the completed pieces! Of course, we really hope you'll visit one of our retailers to see everything in person. We'll let you know in late December and will continue to update our web site with all of the great people we've found to represent our line.

Organizing the shelves!

We are printing, cutting, counting, gluing, folding, shrinkwrapping and organizing like there's no tomorrow. Check out our shelves. They starting to get full with the new sets and we still have a ton more waiting to be ready for temporary storage. I say temporary, because we are close to assembling the pages and doing the final prep for our new custom albums.

Here's a quick peek:
